The scholarships, now in their 35th year, were founded as a tribute to—and means of remembering—the students studying in London and Florence through Syracuse University who were killed in the Dec. 21, 1988, bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. 

The One University Awards Ceremony, an annual event to honor members of the Syracuse University community who are making a difference through academics, scholarship, creative work and dedicated service, will be held Friday, April 19, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel.

Alana Coffman (international relations, citizenship and civic engagement) and Iona Volynets (international relations, history) were among those named 2024 Syracuse University Scholars, the highest undergraduate honor the University bestows.

In addition to receiving a stipend to support their studies, the six students have been invited to attend an anniversary celebration in Washington, D.C.

The delegation was led by Maxwell students Lily Collins, Alana Auchmoody and Chenglu Jiang.

Takeda is leading the citizenship and civic engagement program on an interim basis, while Silverstein has taken the helm of the Sociology Department. 

Seated in citizenship and civic engagement, the professorship was created with a generous gift by the Gerald and Daphna Cramer Foundation.

“The Remembrance Scholars represent the future while honoring the past, which is both a great privilege and a great responsibility,” says Vice Chancellor and Provost Gretchen Ritter. “This year’s students, who have demonstrated strong leadership skills and a commitment to service, are up to the task. As with those who were tragically lost nearly 35 years ago, we are proud that these students are members of our University community.”

Maxwell students Nish Chowdhury and Camran Shealy, and alumna Sarah Dolbier '22 are among those named 2023 recipients of awards through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. The program funds a range of awards that include English teaching assistantships (ETA) and study/research grants in over 140 countries.

Chelsea Brown (citizenship and civic engagement), Dara Drake (policy studies), Maggie Sardino (citizenship and civic engagement) and Alesandra "Sasha" Temerte (economics) were among those named 2023 Syracuse University Scholars, the highest undergraduate honor the University bestows.
