Hamid Ekbia is University Professor in Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.

Ekbia’s research focuses the political economy of computing, in the future of work, and in how technologies mediate socio-economic, cultural, and geo-political relations of modern societies.

His writings cover the areas of the political economy of computing, artificial intelligence and global development. Published works include "Artificial Dreams" (Cambridge University Press, 2008), "Big Data is not a Monolith" (MIT Press, 2016) with Cassidy R. Sugimoto, and "Heteromation" (MIT Press, 2017) with Bonnie A. Nardia. 

Ekbia earned a Ph.D. in 2003 from Indian University, an M.Sc. in 1979 from UCLA and a B.Sc. in 1977 from Abadan Institute of Technology.
