Aren Burnside (he/him) is a Ph.D. student in anthropology, with a focus in political anthropology. He received a B.A. in anthropology from Syracuse University in 2020, along with a B.A. in philosophy.
He is especially focused on the intersection between anthropology and urban geography with respects to the City of Syracuse and looking at how a variety of actors have historically and contemporaneously shaped the space and materiality of the city. Along with this, Aren is understanding the way Syracuse and the surrounding area engage with and maintain a legacy of colonial dispossession and disenfranchisement.
His topical interests include decolonialism, military ecology, militarization, empire and sovereignty, race and class, materiality, and power and violence.
