Communicating in a Cross-Cultural Environment: Skills for Living and Working in a Multi-Cultural World

204 Maxwell Hall

Add to: Outlook, ICal, Google Calendar

The workshop will be led by Professor Peter Castro. How do cultural differences create barriers for effective communication? What cultural values do we have that affect how we interact with others, especially those from differing cultural backgrounds? What skills are useful when working with people from different cultural backgrounds? What is the role of these cultural differences in addressing interpersonal conflicts? Our interactions with the world are shaped by our cultural values and understandings. This workshop will seek to address the above questions through a broad analysis of cultural values and understandings, and a focus on identifying barriers that prevent effective cross-cultural communication. Emphasis will be placed on developing and practicing skills that will aid in decreasing the effects of these barriers. The workshop will be highly interactive with simulations and participatory activities. Free & open to all! Morning coffee and lunch will be provided. We’re Turning 100!

To mark our centennial in the fall of 2024, the Maxwell School will hold special events and engagement opportunities to celebrate the many ways—across disciplines and borders—our community ever strives to, as the Oath says, “transmit this city not only not less, but greater, better and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us.”

Throughout the year leading up to the centennial, engagement opportunities will be held for our diverse, highly accomplished community that now boasts more than 38,500 alumni across the globe.
