South Asia Center Presents: Life in a Militarized Zone: Experiences from Indian-Occupied Kashmir Indian- Occupied Kashmir has been a site of contestation between the Indian government and those who want independent Kashmir for over 50 years. Armed conflict, curfews, and the constant presence of an estimated half a million Indian military and paramilitary forces has resulted in the insinuation of violence into Kashmiri people’s everyday lives. This event will examine the experiences of people living in Indian-occupied Kashmir with the goal of understanding how to foster a just and lasting peace in Kashmir. 2:30 Opening Remarks 2:45 Haley Duschinski (Ohio University) “Everyday Violence, Institutional Denial, and Struggles for Justice in Kashmir.” 3:30 Screening of In Shopian (Chris Giamo, 2012). This film investigates the double murder of two Kashmiri women amidst the social unrest in the capital Srinagar. 4:00 Panel Discussion—Haley Duschinski , Chris Giamo (Independent Filmmaker), Kelsey Kobik (SU BA ‘10), Wajahat Ahmad (Syracuse University).
