Abbey Steele- Assistant Professor, Public Administration and International Affairs.
Who joins insurgent armed groups? Who demobilizes? Who switches sides? These questions are central to understanding dynamics and duration of civil wars. To explore these questions, this project will analyze data on the 2,500 demobilized combatants of the Popular Liberation Army (EPL) in Colombia. The talk will discuss possible research designs to analyze who joined, who rearmed, who joined rival armed groups, and who remained in civil life following demobilization in 1993.
