China's Economic Diplomacy in Sri Lanka
China’s rising influence is widely discussed. But how exactly does the world’s newest rising superpower go about its foreign policy? Moreover, how are other countries responding to China’s efforts to curry favor and increase its soft power?
In this talk, Dimitar Gueorguiev explores the case of Sri Lanka, one of China’s most recent and most dramatic foreign policy ventures, to argue that China’s inexperience with democratic politics, along with its poor reputation for integrity, will continue to stand in the way of its quest for global influence.
Sponsored by the East Asia Program and South Asia center at the Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs.
