Elsa Fornero, Former Minister of Labor, Social Politics, and Equal Opportunities in Italy
Reforming the Italian Pension amidst the Financial Crisis: From Principles to Practice
Professor Elsa Fornero is a professor of economics at the University of Turin, Italy.
She is the author of numerous publications about public and private pension systems, population aging, household savings, life insurance and retirement choices.
She is also the founder of CeRP—Center for Research on Pensions and Welfare Politics (the first center of this kind in Italy).
She is internationally known for an important role she played during one of the most difficult moments in Italy's recent history—the Euro Crisis. She served as Minister of Labor, Social Policies and Equal Opportunities in Italy’s Monti Government, a “technocratic” government entrusted with the task of preventing the 2008 Financial Crisis from destroying the Italian economy and the Euro. In her capacity as Minister, she carried out major pension and labor market reforms in 2011 and 2012. Her reforms—commonly referred to as the Fornero Reforms—were crucial in getting the EU to lift its austerity measures towards Italy.
