The Corbyn Insurgency
in Britain
An Insider's View From the First Member of Parliament to Nominate the New Leader of the Labour Party
How did avowed socialist Jeremy Corbyn win election as Labour Leader in the UK, on an anti-war, pro-refugee platform? Are there lessons from that election which might apply to the U.S.? Join MP Jon Trickett for a discussion of those questions.
Jon Trickett has been the Member of Parliament for Hemsworth since 1996, representing a number of former mining communities in the heart of Yorkshire.
Prior to being elected to Parliament, he served as Leader [mayor] of the Leeds City Council.
Trickett has twice served in a Labour Government, the second time working at No. 10 Downing Street as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Prime Minister Gordon Brown. He has also been a critic of “New Labour,” publicly voicing concerns over the marketization of public services, the introduction of tuition fees, and the war in Iraq.
Trickett was a member of Ed Miliband’s Shadow Cabinet and served as Deputy Labour Party Chair, and is now a member of Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, where he is Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government and Shadow Minister for the Constitutional Convention. He is one of Corbyn’s closest advisors.
