Ervand Abrahamian, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Iranian and Middle Eastern History and Politics, Baruch College, The City University of New York, to present "Revisiting the 1953 Coup: Was It About Oil or Communism?"
In August 1953, the United States and the United Kingdom cooperated to secretly overthrow the democratically-elected government of Iranian Prime Minister Muhammad Mossadeq. The 1953 coup d’état had profound implications on the course of Iranian society and politics as well as U.S. foreign policy toward Iran and the broader Middle East. Professor Ervand Abrahamian discusses recently declassified American documents to examine why Mossadeq was deposed.
