Gladys McCormick - Immigration in Trump’s America:  Perspectives from Policy and Pedagogy

Professor McCormick will provide an  overview of the three executive orders on  immigration that President Trump signed this  past January and discuss their roll out and  consequences. She focuses on how they’ve  targeted specific groups of individuals, most  notably Deferred Action Childhood Arrival  (DACA) students and Mexican immigrants in  general, as well as their overall costs of  implementation and effect on US-Mexico  relations. She will comment on facilitating  discussion of these issues inside and outside  academic circles as well as how to tack them  onto competing notions of citizenship.

Corri Zoli - Gaps in Protection at the Intersection of  Law and International Migration

In her talk, Professor Zoli explores built-in  legal tensions in the 1951 Refugee Convention  and 1967 Refugee Protocol, including security  exceptions to refugee rights. Such gaps in  protections are increasingly visible across a  wide array of cases, from the European  refugee crisis, to Dreamers in the United  States. She will examine how international law,  even with its tensions and limitations, suggests  possible avenues and solutions.
