This is a conference call hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations.
The Academic Conference Call series provides the opportunity for students across the country and around the world to participate in an interactive conversation with a CFR fellow, Foreign Affairs author, or other expert. Calls take place every other week during the fall and spring semesters and are dedicated to a wide range of international affairs and U.S. foreign policy topics. Background readings are distributed prior to each call, and the audio recording is posted online afterward.
The speaker for this conference call is Kathleen R. McNamara, Professor of Government and Foreign Service, Georgetown University.
For background reading, participants may want to review the following:
- Francis Fukuyama, "Against Identity Politics: The New Tribalism and the Crisis of Democracy," Foreign Affairs, September/October 2018.
- Spencer Boyer, "It's Time for the United States and Europe to Face the Politics of Cultural Displacement," Foreign Policy, July 30, 2018.
- Catherine De Vries and Kathleen R. McNamara, "How Choice Can Save Europe: The EU Needs Less Technology and More Democracy," ForeignAffairs.com, May 14, 2018.

We’re Turning 100!
To mark our centennial in the fall of 2024, the Maxwell School will hold special events and engagement opportunities to celebrate the many ways—across disciplines and borders—our community ever strives to, as the Oath says, “transmit this city not only not less, but greater, better and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us.”
Throughout the year leading up to the centennial, engagement opportunities will be held for our diverse, highly accomplished community that now boasts more than 38,500 alumni across the globe.
