“The Muslim Woman”: Between Orientalism and Securitization

Virtual

Add to: Outlook, ICal, Google Calendar

The Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs and the Middle Eastern Studies Program is proud to host Jocelyne Cesari, Ph.D., for a virtual talk on International Women's Day.

The commonly held picture of the Muslimah is the black or blue clad woman under the yolk of males. Jocelyne Cesari will go beyond this dominant perception to restore the agency of Muslim women.

Her talk will highlight the diversity of religious positions on the question of women rights. It will argue that there is no radical incompatibility between Islamic prescriptions and the Individual Rights of women but that the perception of such a convergence is obstructed by patriarchal cultures and politicization of Islam across Muslim countries and among Muslim minorities.

We’re Turning 100!

To mark our centennial in the fall of 2024, the Maxwell School will hold special events and engagement opportunities to celebrate the many ways—across disciplines and borders—our community ever strives to, as the Oath says, “transmit this city not only not less, but greater, better and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us.”

Throughout the year leading up to the centennial, engagement opportunities will be held for our diverse, highly accomplished community that now boasts more than 38,500 alumni across the globe.
