The Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs is proud to host Oleksandr Markushyn, mayor of Irpin, Ukraine. Markushyn holds a master of public administration from the National Academy of Public Administration under the president of Ukraine. On April 14, 2023, the cities of Syracuse and Irpin will become sister cities.
Markushyn personally organized and fought in the defense of Irpin, a suburb of Kyiv, in February and March 2022. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded Mayor Markushyn with the Order “For Courage” in March 2022 “for a significant personal contribution to the protection of state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, the demonstration of courage and selfless actions during the organization of the defense of communities from Russian invaders.”
