The Moynihan Institute presents the new Study of Global Politics (SGP) series! We are kicking off the new series with presentations of two new books by Maxwell faculty, Erin Hern and Daniel McDowell.

Hern will talk about “Explaining Successes in Africa: Things Don’t Always Fall Apart,” in which she focuses on African countries that have performed well in certain arenas and uses theory and case comparison to explain these successes. McDowell will introduce his book “Bucking the Buck: US Financial Sanctions and the International Backlash Against the Dollar,” which argues that punishing U.S. financial sanctions provoke its adversaries to reduce their reliance on the dollar and move into alternative currencies.

About the authors:

Erin Hern is an associate professor of political science at Syracuse University. Her research examines determinants of political behavior, with a focus on how institutions and policy shape individual choices about political action.

Daniel McDowell is an associate professor of political science at Syracuse University. His research focuses on the international politics of money and finance, with an emphasis on the U.S. and China in these arenas.

We’re Turning 100!

To mark our centennial in the fall of 2024, the Maxwell School will hold special events and engagement opportunities to celebrate the many ways—across disciplines and borders—our community ever strives to, as the Oath says, “transmit this city not only not less, but greater, better and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us.”

Throughout the year leading up to the centennial, engagement opportunities will be held for our diverse, highly accomplished community that now boasts more than 38,500 alumni across the globe.
