King Charles III's coronation will take place on May 6, 2023, at Westminster Abbey in London. It is likely to be shorter and smaller in scale than Queen Elizabeth II's 1953 coronation, and the coronation procession is also expected to be more modest.
"He's [King Charles III] supposed to like the simpler life, although to what extent a king can have a simpler life is an open question," says Alan Allport, Dr. Walter Montgomery and Marian Gruber Professor of History.
"With all coronations there's always this attempt to match on the one hand, the traditional and the dignified with, on the other hand, the sense of contemporary as well," he says. "You're going to get a mixture of some of the traditional things we've seen...but there's also going to be an attempt, I'm sure, to try to make it a bit more 21st century."
