April 6, 2017 | Rachel Reyes, Center for Migration Studies New York, NY – The Center for Migration Studies of New York (CMS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Jamie Winders as editor of the International Migration Review (IMR), the premier social science journal in the field of international migration, ethnic group relations, and refugee movements.

Jamie Winders is O’Hanley Faculty Scholar and chair of the department of geography in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. Professor Winders’s research focuses on the changing geographies of immigrant settlement within a US and an international context and the emergence of new immigrant destinations. She has written extensively about the interactions between immigration and racial formations and dynamics, as well as the ways that immigrant population growth reconfigures institutions like schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods. With wider interests in cultural geography and social reproduction, Professor Winders also writes about critical pedagogy and social and new media. She has authored many articles covering topics from immigrant rights organizing and urban immigrant politics to immigration and the 2016 US presidential election and the intersections of feminist and economic scholarship. Her work has addressed the dynamics associated with both immigrant and refugee settlement, and she is best known for her research on immigrant belonging in southern US cities. In 2013, she authored the book Nashville in the New Millennium: Immigrant Settlement, Urban Transformation, and Social Belonging and co-edited The Wiley-Blackwell Companion to Cultural Geography. From 2010 to 2011, Professor Winders was a visiting scholar at the Russell Sage Foundation. Prior to joining Syracuse, she obtained her PhD and Bachelor of Arts at the University of Kentucky and her Masters of Arts at the University of British Columbia. 

Professor Winders will be replacing Douglas Gurak, professor emeritus of development sociology at Cornell University. Professor Gurak has served as IMR editor since 2014 and will continue as editor until the transition in October 2017.
