From the Office of Multicultural Affairs at Syracuse University:It is fitting that the recipient of the 2018 James Duah-Agyeman Award for Faculty is the other Dr. D. on campus: Dr. Francine D’Amico.

In recognition of her service, dedication and commitment, Dr. D’Amico exemplifies the mission and vision of our collective programs to provide scholarly experiences to promote academic progress, personal growth and professional success. 

Earlier this year, Dr. D. was recognized with a promotion to teaching professor by the dean of the Maxwell School for her accomplishments in teaching, advising, service, curricular and co-curricular development. Dr. D. earned a B.A. from William Smith College and a Ph.D. from Cornell University and joined the Maxwell school in 2000.

Dr. D’s research focuses on issues relating to gender and international relations and the experiences of women in non-gender traditional occupations. In addition to teaching undergraduate courses on international law and organizations, global governance, and Latin America and the Caribbean, D’Amico currently serves as director of undergraduate studies in international relations. She directs academic advising for all undergraduate majors/minors and serves as the faculty advisor for the International Relations Learning Community, the Model United Nations Club and Team, Sigma Iota Rho Honor Society, SU-UNICEF and OXFAM@SU student organizations, as well as several university committees. 

A student MUN member notes: Dr. D’Amico’s dedication to the official school team is unmatched.  Dr. D’Amico makes it a point to come to every delegate’s committee session, and like a supportive mother, she is in the room with her camera, recording and snapping away. She brings delegates granola bars, snacks, and fruit to keep us through the day. At the end of each day, she invites us into her personal room for debriefing – where she carefully listens to the run-down of our days and genuinely relates with us.”

We recognize Dr. D. for her relentless and tireless support of students, more specifically McNair scholars.  Dr. D’Amico encourages student participation in McNair by writing letters of recommendations during the application process. She has served as a faculty mentor to a number of program scholars.  She also provides support and encouragement in and out of classroom settings, especially as it relates to graduate education and other post-baccalaureate pursuits. Another advisee notes:  “…this woman is amazing!  (she is) truly interested in helping students and will take hours out of her day to work with students to ensure they get a great undergrad experience.  (She) focuses on areas not only of interest to them but also of use to their career in the future.  She works hard to ensure students are successful.”   

Dr. D’Amico, thank you for providing research, teaching, and learning experiences for all students at SU. We want you to know that your efforts, and your work, do not go unnoticed. Today, we recognize and honor you for your commitment to the development, training and preparation of the next generation of university scholars.
