Odlanyer Hernández de Lara, PhD candidate in anthropology, has been completing archaeological research on the history of slavery in Cuba, and the lasting material impact it created. His research has been published in a co-authored Spanish article, "San Augustine Archaeological Ruins: The Slavery Legacy in Matanzas", in the Cuban journal Revista científica De Arquitectura Y Urbanismo. Problem: The study of the slavery's material legacy in Cuba is a topic poorly researched from archaeology. Objective: To document the first known coffee plantation that implemented the humid method for coffee production in Matanzas, and to provide tools to monitor architectonical structures' preservation. Methods: A multidisciplinary approach is implemented as it is characterized by Historical Archaeology, which includes the analysis of diverse materialities, from documentary sources to archaeological artifacts and structures, together with oral sources. Results: The archaeological site's configuration is documented with possible functionality and chronology for each structure, which helps define the production method used in the plantation. Conclusions: This site constitute an early example of a coffee plantation in Cuba and one of the few of its kind in the Habana-Matanzas region. Preservation solutions and challenges are discussed, especially the illegal looting of archaeological sites, an increasing practice that has not received yet official attention.
