Former President Trump recently attended the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention in Chicago where he questioned Vice President Kamala Harris's racial identity, wrongly claiming that in the past, she only promoted her Indian heritage. Harris is the first Black woman and Asian American to serve as vice president.

“It's really unfortunate that a lot of people are hearing these comments for the first time. These are not surprising comments for those of us who have been following Donald Trump for the last 20 years or so, since he started making pretty similar comments about Barack Obama and his birth certificate,” Jenn Jackson, assistant professor of political science, tells Bloomberg.

“So we're accustomed to this type of language, this vitriolic language suggesting that anyone who is not a white, middle class American male is somehow not an American citizen. It's very on brand for a kind of more racist, white supremacist-oriented, misogynoiristic campaign, which he has run since before he actually announced his first run for office,” Jackson says.

In an interview with CBC News, Jackson says, “He drew into question so many people's backgrounds and identities that he ended up alienating so many groups of people who you would think he would've gone to the NABJ conference to actually bring under his umbrella to vote for him.”
