The Israel-Hamas war is nearing the end of its second week. President Biden visited Israel this week with the intention preventing the conflict from escalating and to moderate Israel’s reaction to the Hamas attacks. But the bombing of the al-Ahli Al Arab Hospital in Gaza put ended those plans.
“Biden’s strong support for Israel has contributed to the heightened anger and frustration in the region. As we have seen in the protests of the last 24 hours, that anger is palpable and will only grow as long as the United States continues to block a ceasefire or even a humanitarian pause at the U.N.,” Osamah Khalil, professor of history and expert on Middle East politics, tells El País.
Khalil tells Al Jazeera, there needs to be an “off-ramp” to stop the fighting, but he says in the immediate future—with Biden’s endorsement—the bombardment of Gaza is set to continue.
Khalil spoke with several other media outlets about the conflict:
Le Devoir: “A war like a backlash for Netanyahu” and “Israel's rapprochement with the Arab world jeopardized by a new war”
NewsRadio 570 WSYR: “Biden Meets Netanyahu”
Vox: “Hamas, the militant group that attacked Israel, explained”
WTVH: “Israeli-Palestinian Conflict”
