President Joe Biden was quick to show solidarity with Israel after the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks, but six months on, American voters have become increasingly unhappy with his handling of the Gaza crisis, according to surveys conducted for Newsweek.
Biden has faced continued criticism from the Arab and Muslim community, the more progressive members of his party, as well as from young voters over his handling of the war.
"The public hand-wringing versus the actual demonstrative support for Netanyahu's government, politically, diplomatically, militarily is going to be difficult for Biden," Osamah Khalil, professor of history, tells Newsweek.
"It would be very difficult for him to explain that to the base and energize the base to come out in November," he adds.
In the Washington Examiner article, "Biden changes tone toward Israel over Gaza war," Khalil says the administration has sought to "shield President Biden from criticism by the Democratic Party base in the middle of an election campaign while at the same time maintaining support for Israel's military campaign."
