Carl Frederick (Terry) Kaelber ‘87 MPA has been named an Encore Public Voices Fellow by Encore.org. The fellowships are granted to people and organizations that help experienced private-sector employees transition into careers of public service.

Kaelber was recently installed as director of the Institute for Empowered Aging, at United Neighborhood Houses (UNH). Kaelber had also worked for UNH from 2008 until 2013, where, working alongside New York City’s Department of Aging, he helped empower self-directed projects among older people in communities across the city. This has included mobilizing older residents to create urban farms, help with mail delivery in public housing, create after school programs for youth, and organize community advocacy around similar goals.

Encore.org is a nonprofit focused on making it easier for adults over 50 to pursue second careers for the public good. It seeks to foreground the value of experience when addressing serious social problems. 

United Neighborhood Houses is a policy and social change organization representing 42 neighborhood settlement houses that reaches 765,000 New Yorkers from all walks of life.

Prior to joining UNH, Kaelber spent a decade as the executive director of services and advocacy for GLBT Elders and also served as a delegate to the 2005 White House Conference on Aging. He previously received the SHARE Award for Innovations in Aging from the University of Pennsylvania.
