For the sixth consecutive year, the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University was selected as an Institute Partner for the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders and is hosting a group of Africa’s emerging public management leaders for a six-week Leadership Institute.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Fellowship is the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) that embodies the United States’ commitment to invest in the future of Africa. Syracuse University is one of 27 U.S. universities selected to host the 700 Mandela Washington Fellows, and one of nine universities hosting a Leadership in Public Management Institute.

The 25 African leaders who are in Syracuse – including a doctor from Nigeria, a journalist from South Sudan and a police officer from Zambia – are learning about governance and public administration issues in the U.S., and their activities include site visits and volunteering with local organizations. They’ll travel to Washington, D.C., at the end of this month to meet with their colleagues who are studying at other universities across the country.

As part of their community service work, the Fellows participated in a clean-up day at Thornden Park on Tuesday, July 16.
