Michael Crow ’85 PhD (PA) has received a lifetime achievement award for his contributions to science, service and leadership by the National Council on Science and the Environment (NCSE).

The NCSE presents the Lifetime Achievement Award at their annual conference to someone who has significantly contributed to science and the environment through research, education, diplomacy, or innovative technologies. Crow, who was appointed president of Arizona State University (ASU) in 2002, was recognized for his long-time commitment to increasing environmental sustainability within higher education while simultaneously leading ASU’s transformation into one of the world’s leading public metropolitan research universities.

While president, Crow has sought to transform ASU into the “New American University” by establishing 24 transdisciplinary schools, including their widely lauded School of Sustainability, in order to better help students develop and enact their ideas. Seeking to move beyond rhetoric to action, Crow has emphasized the importance of better communicating academic research with the general public. These successful efforts were publicly recognized when the university was named the “#1 most innovative” school by U.S. News & World Report.

Prior to joining ASU, Crow was executive vice provost at Columbia University, where he helped pioneer the university’s on-line education strategy and helped create the Columbia Earth Institute. Crow is also chairman of the board for In-Q-Tel, a U.S. Central Intelligence Agency-funded nonprofit that invests in startups so as to catalyze the development and access of innovative technologies to the national security community.
