Model UN team named distinguished delegation at conference in DC

A Syracuse University/Maxwell team participating in the National Model United Nations (NMUN) conference in November was named a “Distinguished Delegation” for its portrayal of the Arab Republic of Egypt. Thirteen students majoring in international relations participated as delegates in this academic conference, which drew approximately 1,000 college and university students from over three dozen countries to our nation’s capital for a simulation of global diplomacy.
Leah Killian ‘19 and Sarah Freisem ‘19 served as co-head delegates for the team. The students participated as delegates in the following committees:
• UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO): Katherine Davis ‘19 and Cynthia Wang ‘19
• UNGA First Committee (GA1 Disarmament/International Security): Eric Moreno ’19 and Baylee Wright ‘19
• UNGA Second Committee (GA2 Economic & Financial): Laurel Bennett ‘19 and Jenna Landsman ‘19
• UN Human Rights Council (HRC): Leah Killian ‘19 and Abby Neuviller ‘19
• International Organization for Migration (IOM): Erin Hamilton ‘19 and Lara Hicks ‘20
• World Health Assembly (WHA): Juliet Juchnewich ’19 and Nasim Ziad ‘19
In addition to the designation as a “Distinguished Delegation” by the conference organizers, several delegates won awards in their committees. Katherine Davis ’19 and Cynthia Wang ’19 won a “Best Position Paper” award in FAO, Erin Hamilton ’19 and Lara Hicks ’20 won a “Best Position Paper” award in IOM, and Juliet Juchnewich ’19 and Nasim Ziad ’19 won a “Best Position Paper” award in WHA. Additionally, Katherine Davis ’19 and Cynthia Wang ’19 won a “Best Delegates” peer-elected award in FAO.
The team will present a slideshow and panel discussion about their conference experience on Wednesday, December 5 at 9:00 am in 225B Eggers Hall.
