Lerner Chair Shannon Monnat's research on deaths of despair and support for Trump in the 2016 presidential election was referenced in the Atlantic article "The 9.9 Percent Is the New American Aristocracy." Monnat found that the Rust Belt counties that put the anti-government-health-care candidate over the top were those that lost the most people in recent years to deaths of despair—those due to alcohol, drugs, and suicide. 05/16/18
