Tessa Murphy, assistant professor of history, has been awarded a long-term fellowship from the John Carter Brown Library at Brown University. As part of the fellowship, Murphy will spend the 2019-20 academic year in residence at the library, where she will have access to their extensive collections of historical documents. These sources will contribute to Murphy’s book manuscript, “The Creole Archipelago: Race and Colonization in the Southern Caribbean, c. 1660-1797.”

The John Carter Brown Library is a center for advanced research in history and the humanities. It contains a world-renowned collection of primary historical documents pertaining to the Americas before 1825. The library offers several long-term fellowships to support outstanding scholarship on the history of the colonial Americas.

Murphy’s current book project, The Creole Archipelago, traces British and French attempts to assimilate or remake colonial societies that evolved beyond the boundaries of European empire in the early modern Caribbean. Numerous institutions have supported her work, including the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, France’s Institut National d’Études Démographiques, the David Library of the American Revolution, and the Clements Library. Her teaching and research focus on the history of the colonial Americas.
