A new scholarship, funded by Walter and Angel Broadnax, will support graduate students at the Maxwell School.  Walter Broadnax is a recently retired member of the Public Administration and International Affairs faculty and a Maxwell alumnus, with a PhD in public administration (1975).  

The new endowment fund will provide scholarship and financial assistance to a graduate student or students enrolled in the School, with preference to those studying public administration. This commitment carries the Broadnaxes’ lifetime giving to Maxwell above the Dean’s Circle level ($100,000-plus).

This newly funded scholarship supplements long-term plans by the Broadnaxes to support the Maxwell School.  In 2008, they informed Syracuse University they had made provisions for a $1-million bequest gift, via their estate, to permanently endow the Walter D. and Angel W. Broadnax Endowed Scholarship Fund, supporting public administration students. The more recent gift serves to activate the scholarship fund prior to the bequest.

“Angel and I have supported Maxwell for many years and we always planned to support Maxwell students through our estate plan,” says Walter Broadnax, “but we were particularly delighted to make this gift and begin seeing students benefit from our support during our lifetimes.”

Walter Broadnax joined the Maxwell School faculty in 2008 as a Distinguished Professor, crowning an illustrious career in public service.  It has included stints as president of the New York State Civil Service Commission, a transition team leader for President Clinton, dean of public affairs at American University, and deputy secretary and chief operating officer of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. At Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, he was founding director of the innovations in state and local government programs. Immediately prior to joining the Maxwell faculty, Broadnax completed six years as the president of Clark Atlanta University, where he was credited with rescuing an institution on the cusp of bankruptcy. He retired from the Maxwell faculty in 2015 and is, as well, a trustee emeritus of Syracuse University. His wife, Angel Broadnax, recently retired too, having been director of strategic initiatives for SU’s College of Visual and Performing Arts, and previously serving 31 years with the U.S. Census Bureau.

“In every respect, Walter Broadnax represents the ideals of the Maxwell School,” said Maxwell Dean David M. Van Slyke. “He first arrived here a serious and public-minded doctoral student, parlayed his Maxwell education into a public-sector career of the highest order, and then returned as a teacher, to share the wisdom of his rich life. It only makes sense that he and Angel would cement that legacy with gifts, both immediate and planned, to help assure that future students have access to the kinds of careers and lives they have enjoyed.
