The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) took place last month in Baku, Azerbaijan. Among the key priorities was securing a new goal on climate finance. While delegates were able to eke out an agreement, some experts say it wasn't enough.

“I don't think COP29 delivered the way many developing countries wanted. It was called the finance COP but you could call it a cop out in terms of how well the countries pledged a fraction of the needed finance. That goal of $1.3 trillion a year becoming only $300 billion a year now, maybe $1.3 trillion in 11 years.” says Farhana Sultana, professor of geography and the environment.

“So it's this constant shifting of goal posts. It should have been much more ambitious and much more rigorous this year because every year we've seen all kinds of problems, and it's just increasing the vulnerability of the most vulnerable in the world,” Sultana says.
