Unbeaten: Rocky Marciano’s Fight for Perfection in a Crooked World, by Mike Stanton ’79 BA (PSc), has been named one of the best books of 2018 by the Boston Globe and Library Journal, and as a 2018 Reader’s Favorite by the Wall Street Journal. The book, originally published by Henry Holt, will appear in paperback in August (published by Picador). It tells the story of professional boxer Rocky Marciano, who died in a plane crash in 1969; and opens a window into a lost era in America involving immigrants, urban America, and societal changes following World War II. Meanwhile, Stanton’s first book, the New York Times bestseller The Prince of Providence (Random House, 2003), will be adapted for the stage by Trinity Repertory Company in Providence. The book describes Buddy Cianci, the charismatic but felonious former mayor of Providence. The stage adaptation is described in the Providence Journal article "Buddy Cianci bio sketch to launch Trinity Rep’s 2019-20 season." Stanton also contributed (with Emmy award-winning journalists Marc Smerling and Zac Stuart-Pontier) to the podcast series Crimetown, which looks at Providence’s incestuous network of corrupt politicians and Mafia bosses; it is one of iTunes’ top-downloaded podcasts.
 
Stanton, a former editor at the Daily Orange who also graduated from Syracuse’s Newhouse School, was a long-time news reporter, sports writer, and investigative reporter, and won a Pulitzer Prize while reporting for the Providence Journal. He is now a member of the journalism faculty at the University of Connecticut.
