Introduction
The author talks about the escalating opioid epidemic and some innovative solutions the author and her colleagues at Yale University and throughout the state of Connecticut, are working on to mitigate the consequences of this public health crisis. According to the recent data released from The National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 20.1 million Americans age 12 and over reported having a substance use disorder; two million specifically related to opioid use disorders in 2016. A total of 11.8 million people aged 12 or older reported a past year opioid misuse. Of these, 8 percent used heroin and 92 percent reported pain reliever misuse only.
