By examples taken from life, Pellow shows the dilemma facing so many women in modern Africa - that the old traditional way, with all their tyrannies and limitations, are still well known and loved, like an old shoe, while the new way, which bring with them the possibilities of almost unlimited opportunities and advantages, are still alien, strange, uncomfortable, often painful to live with.
