Angelia Subulwa on "When Refuge Becomes Home: Settlement, Repatriation, and Integration in Zambia"

The majority of news coverage on African refugee movements and settlements concentrates on the crisis phase of the refugee experience, ignoring host communities and rarely capturing the complex geographies of forced displacement. In response I present a feminist geopolitical analysis based on in-depth interviews with Mozambican /Angolan /Congolese refugees and their hosts in Zambia. The daily struggles of both refugees and host institutions and communities, through multiple displacements, reflect the concrete ways in which all involved seek to emplace themselves, transforming refuge into home and thus revealing the highly contested and politicized nature of refugee management.
