Phillip Burke ’07 B.A. (Soc)
was a top 13 finalist out of 850 submissions for his play, “He’s the First,” in the Samuel French Off-Off Broadway Short Play Festival. Based in New York City, the festival promotes emerging directors, performers and producers. He also earned a B.F.A. from the College of Visual and Performing Arts in 2007 and is an inaugural fellow with The Latinx Playwrights Circle Summer Jam Fellowship.

recently completed the Leadership Greater Washington (LGW) program. Based in Washington, D.C., LGW offers career-building skills and leadership training to mid-level professionals.

has joined the Whitman School of Management as the associate director of defense programs.
John Crandall ’10 B.A. (Anth)
has recently defended his Ph.D. dissertation, "The Bioarchaeology of Labor Exploitation: Overseas Chinese Workers, Ethnic Violence, and the Burdens of American Progress (~1860-1930)” at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His research on migrant laborer health and anti-migrant violence contributes to the Chinese Railroad Workers of N. America Project at Stanford University.
Declan Cullen ’13 Ph.D. (Geog)
has co-authored the book “Disrupting D.C.: The Rise of Uber and the Fall of the City,” with Katie Wells ’08 M.A. (Geog)/’13 Ph.D. (Geog) and Kafui Attoh ’08 M.A. (Geog)/’13 Ph.D . The book is an analysis of the deep social divisions and urban politics that gave rise to the gig economy in the U.S.
Katalin Fábián ’93 M.A. (PSc)/ ’99 Ph.D. (PSc)
received the 2022 Heldt Prize for best book in Slavic, East European and Eurasian Women’s Studies for a book she co-edited, “Routledge Handbook of Gender in Central-Eastern Europe and Eurasia” (Routledge, 2021). Fábián is professor of government and law at Lafayette College.
Paul Finkelman ’71 B.A. (AmSt)
has been named the Robert E. and Susan T. Rydell Professor at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. In this role, he will serve as a distinguished scholar on campus, meet with students and provide a public lecture.
Katherine Frega ’16 B.A. (PSt)
has accepted a faculty appointment as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at SUNY Upstate Medical University, where she will also complete her residency in OB-GYN in June 2024.
Christopher Friday ’92 B.A. (IR)
graduated from the University of Florida with a doctorate in business administration. He works as a lecturer in the Business Analytics and Economics Department at the University of New Haven.
Joseph Gale ’17 M.A. (IR)
serves as the assistant defense attaché at the U.S. embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He held the same position in La Paz, Bolivia. He has worked for the U.S. Department of Defense since 2017.
John R. Gall ’16 M.A. (IR)
started a new position in January 2023 as an analyst with PotomacWave in Washington, D.C.
Rosie Garcia ’09 B.A. (PSc)
recently received a master's degree from Johns Hopkins University and has been invited to the National Nuclear Security Administration 2023-2024 Graduate Fellowship Program. Through this program, Garcia will receive training and practical experience in U.S. nuclear security.
Sam Giber ’13 B.A. (Econ)
was promoted to general partner at Blisce, a private equity firm based in Paris and New York City that invests in consumer brands and global technology companies. He serves on the boards of Headspace Health, Redesign Health, Candid Co. and Dice and on the board of the Epic Foundation, a global venture philanthropy nonprofit.
Susan T. Gooden ’95 M.A. (PSc)/ ’96 Ph.D. (PSc)
was honored by the National Academy of Public Administration with the 2023 Philip J. Rutledge Social Equity Award. Gooden received the award for her work in promoting social equity as dean and professor in the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Sven-Erik Kaiser ’83 B.A. (PSc)/ ’86 J.D./M.P.A.
is the senior policy advisor in the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The office regulates pesticide use and determines maximum levels for pesticide residue in food.
Phil Kangas ’98 M.P.A.
accepted a position as director of the Outreach and Business Development Division of the U.S. Department of Energy. He focuses on outreach to clean energy technology innovators and entrepreneurs.
Christian Lee ’08 M.P.A.
has joined the board of trustees for the Coast Guard Foundation, a nonprofit that supports current and former U.S. Coast Guard members and their families. Lee served 24 years in the Coast Guard, retiring with the rank of captain.
Alexander R. MacDonald ’18 M.A.
has been director of Africa policy in the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) since June 2023. The DFC is a U.S. federal government agency that finances development projects in developing countries.
Julie Madlin ’88 B.A. (Hist)
has retired after 31 years as a middle school social studies teacher at Heuvelton Central School in Heuvelton, N.Y. She continues to work as a municipal historian for the city of Ogdensburg, N.Y., and as the director of the Ogdensburg History Museum.
Kamal Mannoo ’80 B.A. (Econ)
was appointed honorary consul general for the Czech Republic in Pakistan. In this role, he is tasked with looking after Czech citizens and assets in Pakistan and strengthening commercial and diplomatic ties between the two countries.
