The Moynihan Institute's Trade, Development and Political Economy (TDPE) program series presents a panel discussion with Margarita Estevez-Abe, associate professor of political science and co-director of the Center for European Studies; Devashish Mitra, professor and chair of economics; and Ryan Monarch, assistant professor of economics and the director of TDPE. Kristen Patel, professor of practice, will chair this panel discussion.

On April 2, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the largest one-day tariff hike in at least 70 years. Stock markets around the globe plummeted. Other countries such as China have already begun to announce new tariffs in response.  This panel of Maxwell School experts breaks down what is happening and what the implications are for the U.S. and global economy.

Margarita Estévez-Abe specializes in the comparative political economy of advanced industrial countries with an interest in how political and economic institutions are constructed differently across countries and their varying effects on politics and ordinary people’s lives. She has taught courses on topics such as comparative politics, comparative politics of gender, comparative welfare states, and democracy. Before joining Syracuse University, she taught at Harvard University.

Devashish Mitra’s research and teaching interests are in international trade, political economy and development economics. More specifically, he has worked on the role of politics in general and of interest groups in particular in the determination of trade policy; and on the impact of trade on productivity growth and labor market outcomes. He is currently working on the impact of  trade on employment, unionization and informality, as well as on the economics and politics of populism. Mitra is also a commentator on Indian economic policy issues.

Ryan Monarch researches buyer-supplier relationships in international trade and how the recent tariff war affected U.S. exports and supply chains. He served as a principal economist for the International Finance division of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve from 2014-2021. His work has been published in the Review of Economics and Statistics, the Journal of International Economics and other publications.
