The international community is increasingly turning against Israel’s ongoing military onslaught in Gaza, in large part due to a growing civilian death toll and humanitarian crisis. That’s putting new pressure on Israel’s government and its closest ally, the U.S., which is supplying and backing the Israeli offensive.
“As this continues over the next few weeks, you’re going to see even greater distance between the U.S. and its allies, and the U.S. and Israel increasingly isolated,” Osamah Khalil, professor of history and chair of the International Relations Undergraduate Program, tells Vox.
In the Newsweek article "Israel's Netanyahu on Collision Course With Joe Biden," Khalil says, "I don't think it's a deepening rift. What we're seeing is par for the course. The U.S. expresses public handwringing and some dismay over the civilian casualties, then a senior administration official will give an anonymous quote critical of Israel."
"Behind the scenes, we're not seeing that. We still have the weapons being shipped and the very public cover at the UN," adds Khalil.
