Darya Dugina, daughter of a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was killed in a car explosion in Moscow over the weekend. Russia is blaming Ukraine for Dugina's death, prompting recriminations between the two countries and fears of escalation.
It’s far too early to know who’s behind the attack, says Brian Taylor, professor of political science and expert in Russian politics. With other recent assassinations in Russia with high political stakes, including opposition politician Boris Nemtsov in 2015, “the investigation usually ends up only going so far.”
Right now, “a lot of the speculation is simply that: It’s speculation trying to figure out, ‘Well, who might have had a motive to do that, and what that motive might have been,’” Taylor says.
