A potential deal between the United States and Ukraine intended to pave the way for an end to the war with Russia was is in the air after a meeting between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office last week grew contentious.
“Over time, in the days and weeks ahead, they'll understand they need to, Zelensky and President Trump need to, engage with each other on a constructive basis,” Vice Adm. Robert Murrett (Ret.), professor of practice of public administration and international affairs, tells LiveNOW from Fox.
In the Newsweek article, “Russia Reacts to Trump-Zelensky Spat: ‘Crashing Like House of Cards’,” Murrett says that despite the differences laid bare between Kyiv and Washington on Friday, talks held two days later among Ukraine's allies in London could limit the extent of the Kremlin's envisaged gains in the past week.
“The talks in United Kingdom…represent a pivotal inflection point for the alliance of nations that support Ukraine, and for the prospects for a ceasefire in the months ahead,” says Murrett. “The collective effort there to step up and exercise leadership for diplomatic initiatives in pursuit of a cessation of hostilities, and at the same time to maintain a close connection with Washington, will serve to limit gains that the Kremlin thought they had recently made.”
