Maxwell School scholars are partners in a project aimed at urban revitalization and positioning the City of Syracuse as a leader in the “smart” sector of the new economy – industries that use technology to drive economic growth and productivity.

Jackson wins Tenth Decade grant to study Black Americans, group threat

Jenn Jackson, assistant professor of political science, has been awarded $20,000 for their research project "Race, Risks, and Responses: Mapping Black Americans’ Response to Group Threat."  The grant is part of a special call to Maxwell faculty offering Tenth Decade Project funding to support research and initiatives that confront systemic racial inequality.

NIA funds multi-university aging and policy center

A consortium of three Upstate New York universities has received a 5-year, $1.5-million grant from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) to fund the Center for Aging and Policy Studies (CAPS), headquartered at Syracuse University.

Heflin receives two grants from UKCPR

Colleen Heflin, professor of public administration and international affairs, was awarded funding for two projects by the University of Kentucky’s Center for Poverty Research. Heflin’s project seeks to understand the temporal dimensions of eligibility for the U.S. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), in light of increased participation in SNAP by older adults.

Karcher wins NSF grant to study transparency in qualitative research

Sebastian Karcher, associate director of the Qualitative Data Repository (QDR) and research assistant professor of political science at Syracuse University, received a grant from the National Science Foundation for his project "Empowering Open Law and Science Collaborative Research." Georgetown University’s Diana Kapiszewski is a co-principal investigator on this project and the proposal is a collaboration with Nic Weber, at the University of Washington, Seattle.

Perry Singleton received a $46,500 grant from the University of Kentucky’s Center for Poverty Research to fund his project, "The Effect of Social Security Retirement Benefits on Food-Related Hardship among Older Americans."

Popp’s work on government research support funded by Sloan Foundation

David Popp, professor of public administration and international affairs, has been awarded a $349,380 grant by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. His research will examine how government funding influences the direction of clean energy research, focusing on whether increased government spending attracts more researchers to the field, or merely substitutes for other funding sources within the field.

Lutz receives NSF RAPID grant for COVID-19 research

Amy Lutz, associate professor of sociology, has received a $97,058 grant from the National Science Foundation's RAPID program for her research project “Working and Teaching from Home in New York State Amidst the Coronavirus Pandemic.”
