Azra Hromadžić, associate professor of anthropology and Dr. Ralph E. Montonna Endowed Professor, recently spoke with Al Jazeera Balkans about the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. 

"People in the Balkans are trapped in ethnic grids, in a monstrous bureaucracy that doesn't work, brought to a 'status quo' that is paralyzing," says Hromadžić. But she is convinced that the American administration is carefully following the events in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"I wouldn't say that they [the U.S.] ignore the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially because of the proximity to the war in Ukraine and many visible and invisible Russian-Chinese interests within the Balkans, which are manifested through various projects, the extraction of natural resources and many other schemes, not only through political discourses," she says.

"That is why the Balkans is still on the radar, because it has been transformed into a problematic place, where broader geopolitical movements, say the 'migrant crisis', are visibly manifested."

"I think that the Americans have not given up on the Balkans, but I am not sure that they will come to solve the internal constitutional crisis of Bosnia and Herzegovina. But that they will send someone who will hint that they are watching everything closely, that they haven't forgotten us, yes," Hromadžić says.
