Maxwell alumnus named vice president of equity and inclusion

Don Sawyer ’08 MA (Soc)/’13 PhD (Soc) has been named vice president for equity and inclusion at Quinnipiac University.
In this new role, Saywer is responsible for engaging community members in critical conversations, helping train faculty, staff, and students with respect to diversity, and setting up an action team that is ready to respond if difficult situations arise. He is also responsible for deepening Quinnipiac University’s relationships with local high-school communities. This new position was created as part of Quinnipiac’s efforts to bolster student engagement across racial and class divisions to strengthen the university’s commitment to diversity.
Sawyer previously served as associate vice president for academic affairs and chief diversity officer at Quinnipiac University. He has been at Quinnipiac since 2012 and is tenured as an associate professor of sociology. Sawyer researches urban education, prisoner reentry, and youth critical media literacy, among other topics. As an applied sociologist, much of his research is done through close partnerships with local communities.
