In a recent interview on CBS' "60 Minutes," President Biden pledged that the U.S. military would defend Taiwan if there was an unprecedented attack by China on the self-governing island.
Kurt Campbell, U.S. National Security Council’s Indo-Pacific coordinator, said after the interview, "The president’s remarks speak for themselves, [and] I do think our policy has been consistent and is unchanged and will continue.”
“Call it a two-pronged approach in terms of the administration statements and the President’s speech on this…to increase the deterrent effect on China and enable us to keep tensions at a somewhat reduced level,” says Ret. Vice Admiral Robert Murrett, professor of practice of public administration and international affairs.
