Tony Malavenda is campaigning to unseat incumbent Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon. His message is that unchallenged control of Onondaga's government has prevented the county and its urban center, Syracuse, from thriving. Professor Grant Reeher says the aggressive campaign could backfire on Malavenda. Criticisms of pay raises and the compensation paid to county officials have been raised in previous elections and haven't gained much traction, Reeher says.
