The Maxwell School’s 100th anniversary celebration will be held on Oct. 18 in Goldstein Auditorium.

Dean David M. Van Slyke met with alumni, partners and dignitaries including India's minister of education, Shri Dharmendra Predhan, during a recent visit that celebrated the Maxwell School's centennial and its 70-plus year partnership with the country. 

Students from the Central Asian nation are taking advantage of all Executive Education and Maxwell as a whole offers, along with pursuing studies through some of the most prestigious fellowships offered.

The resolution was sponsored in the Senate by Sen. Rachel May and in the Assembly by Assemblymembers William Magnarelli '70 B.A. (Hist), L'73, Pamela Hunter and Albert Stirpe.  

The relationship between the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and the government and people of India dates back more than 70 years, with thousands of senior officials taking advantage of Executive Education’s training and degree programs, and others study through some of the most prestigious fellowships offered.

Next month, Aibek Kabyldin will be among the latest midcareer professionals from Kazakhstan to finish a one-year research and academic program through the school’s Visiting Executive Scholar (VES) partnership with that country. The program, which debuted about a year ago, links the Maxwell School with employees of the Academy of Public Administration (APA), under the president of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Syracuse University, jointly with Cybertrust America, NIST Global Community Technology Consortium (GCTC), US Ignite, and Global Cyber Alliance, has graduated its first cohort enrolled in the professional course aimed at equipping leaders in government, academia and the private sector with foundational knowledge and skills for successful smart city initiatives while expanding their professional network.

Maxwell’s partnership with the government of India and IIMB continues the efforts of civil servants and academics from both countries to learn from each other. “This is an active partnership that works for all parties,” Dan Nelson, international program manager, says.

“We enjoy working with students from Kazakhstan because they are so appreciative of their opportunity to study at the Maxwell School,” says Steve Lux, director of the Executive Education program. “Every one of them are eager to apply what they have learned to the challenges facing their country."

“What is clear from conversation with our alumni and fellow scholars is that public administration—as a field of practice and academic study—in nations around the world is in a time of revolutions, and that it is going to take a cadre of well-trained, committed people to help us deal with the challenges of the 21st century,” said Tina Nabatchi, Joseph A. Strasser Endowed Professor in Public Administration.

Uzbekistan Ambassador to the United States Javlon Vahobov and senior officers from the Uzbekistan Embassy met Monday with Syracuse University officials to discuss educational partnerships between their country, the Maxwell School, and the School of Information Studies (iSchool). The visit included meetings with leadership of both schools, a tour of campus, and meetings with students.
