In the News: Leonard M. Lopoo

A group comprised of four researchers — representing the Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion and the Maxwell X Lab — will receive approximately $500,000 over three years in support of their research on different opioid court treatment interventions across New York State. 

Rebecca Casciano ’03 M.P.A. founded Glass Frog in 2012 with the goal of making her research insights from her time as a Ph.D. student at Princeton actionable. Jennifer Puma ’03 M.P.A. is currently Glass Frog's senior manager for operations and client delivery. They spoke with Leonard Lopoo, Maxwell Advisory Board Professor of Public Policy and director of Maxwell’s Center for Policy Research, about new trends and academic developments in program evaluation.

"If we see fewer immigrants coming to the U.S., or if we start to restrict the immigrants who come in to those who look a lot like middle-class Americans, with respect to fertility rates, we’re going to see completely different fertility rates in the United States," says Len Lopoo, professor of public administration and international affairs.

“There’s been an explosion in the quantity and forms of data available to support organizational decision making,” says Robert Bifulco, chair of public administration and international affairs. Assistant Professor Matthew M. Young asserts that soon, all public administration employees will be expected to have data analysis skills.

"Think about a professional woman who has completed college and some graduate work and may or may not be married, and if they’re married, they have a partner with a similar income," Len Lopoo, professor of public administration and international affairs and director of the Center for Policy Research, says. "So they’re sort of in the part of their careers where they’re really climbing rapidly."

Lopoo was asked about the political dimensions of Paid family leave, and why it has stumped congress for years.

“Codifying Data Analytics for Public Policy as an area of study will allow us to deepen and expand our relationships with top employers in this area and ensure that Maxwell remains at the leading edge of this rapidly evolving field,” said Chair and Professor of Public Administration and International Affairs Robert Bifulco about Maxwell's new area of study in Data Analytics for Public Policy.

Maxwell X Lab, part of the Center for Policy Research at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, recently completed a series of projects designed to reduce overdue property tax bills in the City of Syracuse. So far, the initiative has helped the City to recoup more than $1.4 million in overdue property taxes, and hundreds of additional properties were prompted to get current on their bills, preventing more costly and troublesome outcomes for both the owner and the City alike.

Len Lopoo, professor of public administration and international affairs, and Kerri Raissian '08 M.P.A./'13 Ph.D. (PA), argue that the steady decline of the birthrate in the U.S. could be a "harbinger of difficulties on the horizon," impacting Social Security and Medicare, and affecting the number of young people to enter the military and to innovate in business.
