CCE major Ambrose wins Mount Vernon Leadership Fellowship

Phoebe Ambrose, a sophomore majoring in citizenship and civic engagement at Maxwell, and food studies at the Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, has been named a 2020 Mount Vernon Leadership Fellow.

Katz appointed general counsel of the Ryan Specialty Group

Mark Katz ’90 B.A. (PSt) has been named the executive vice president and general counsel of the Ryan Specialty Group, a Chicago-based insurance firm. In this new role, Katz will lead the company’s legal, compliance and regulatory functions.

Lerner Center brief focuses on COVID-19, keeping older NYers healthy

"The Spatial Distribution of New York State’s Older Population: Let’s Keep New York’s Older Adults Safe and Healthy during the Coronavirus Pandemic," a research brief written by Mary Helander, a PhD student in social science and a graduate fellow in the Lerner Center, looks at how the distribution of New York State's older adult population matters for coronavirus.

Eatman named finance director for the Town of Hamden, Conn.

Curtis Eatman ’09 BA (PSc)/’11 MPA, Syracuse Alum, was hired as the new finance director for Hamden, Connecticut. In his new role managing the town’s fiscal affairs, Eatman will be primarily responsible for helping Hamden recover from a recent credit downgrade and helping to reduce their current debt burden.

Shi’s education research funded by Russell Sage and Gates Foundations

Ying Shi, assistant professor of public administration and international affairs, recently won a $29,809 grant jointly funded by the Russell Sage and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundations for her upcoming research related to educational inequality and opportunity. John Singleton, an assistant professor of economics at the University of Rochester, will also be an investigator on this project.

Orose appointed executive director of Words Alive

Humphrey Fellows workshop, Coronavirus serves as case study

Humphrey Fellows at a recent weeklong seminar discussed the coronavirus in the context of crisis management planning. “Crises are almost the perfect storm for challenges in good governance,” workshop leader and Maxwell School faculty affiliate Bruce W. Dayton said. “During a crisis you are under high stress. Everyone is paying attention. You have very short time to make decisions and you’re confronted with uncertainty. All of those are interconnected.”
