"In response to the climate crisis we face, our leaders must not continue to merely say 'no' to climate policies proposed by others, or to hope, as we have for decades, for an unforeseeable technological breakthrough that will render fossil fuels uneconomical," write eleven scientists and professors from SUNY ESF and Syracuse University.

“It is amazing, of course, to see something I worked on for a year come to fruition. It is even more gratifying to know it is something that will help SU become more sustainable and subsequently make the world a little better!," says Elizabeth Hayes '16 B.A. (Geog/CCE). Her research for the Citizenship and Civic Engagement degree's senior Capstone Project provided the legwork for the SU Bookstore's reusable bag program.

“The problem of low-wage workers is real,” says Professor of Economics Don Dutkowsky. “It’s a trap for them. These jobs are precious to people, but they may not pay the best and moving around is not easy.”

 According to Professor of Political Science Grant Reeher, progressives will have to sustain the movement to the midterm elections of 2018 if they want to enact fundamental change. "The question from here on in is how sustainable will this be," Reeher said. "What will this look like a year from now?"

Miriam Elman, associate professor of political science, says President Trump “really values uncertainty as a matter of strategy and policy,” leading to questions about the U.S. Israel alliance.

Minch Lewis, adjunct professor of public administration and international affairs, pointed out this is not the first time the City of Syracuse has gone through government overhaul. “We have to be open-minded and realize this is a historical time and there’s a historic opportunity,” Lewis says.

"The two parties to the conflict should meet in a confidential setting where they can try to get at the deep roots of the conflict and mutually explore a possible solution," says Frederick Carriere, research professor of political science.

"If we were willing to make a concession in the South China Sea to get support in North Korea, that might make the South Koreans or Japanese happy — but it certainly wouldn’t make the Vietnamese, the Filipinos, or the Malaysians happy," says University Professor James Steinberg. "I think we have to recognize that we have a range of interests here, and each of these really needs to be dealt with on their own terms."
