Hamid Ekbia, University Professor and director of the Autonomous Systems Policy Institute, was recently a guest on FINTECH.TV. He discusses the transformative future of (AI) and weighs in on some of the challenges shaping the next wave of artificial intelligence.
“It [AI] is going to stay. In what shape is anybody's guess,” Ekbia says. “My best guess is that the current paradigm, which is called machine learning or deep learning—which has given rise to generative AI—that is going to be the dominant paradigm for a while, but not necessarily in the long run. I'm sure other paradigms will come along and we will have more of AI in some other form,” he says.
“Some people compare AI to the atomic bomb. I don't think this is that kind of risk, but there are risks. There are concerns—ethical, economic, social and cultural—that have to be addressed before it is too late. And I think that one of our best tools to do that is policy. We have to make sure we put things on the right track,” says Ekbia.
“I said that AI is going to stay so in a sense it is an indispensable part of our lives but its trajectory is not inevitable. So I want to make that distinction between the indispensability of AI and the inevitability of its future trajectory,” he says. “We have to make sure we put it on the right track so that it serves the interests of the majority of our society rather than just a select few.”
