Hurricane Milton charged through the Gulf of Mexico toward Florida on Wednesday, growing from a tropical storm into a Category 4 hurricane. It's expected to bring massive storm surges, damaging winds and flooding rains.

In addition, Milton is threatening communities already battered by deadly Hurricane Helene, which came ashore just two weeks ago.

“The type of damage that you'll see is to property, to infrastructure, to roads and highways, but also to critical infrastructure like hospitals and power stations. And this will be devastating. It will be in the many billions of dollars,” says Farhana Sultana, professor of geography and the environment.
